I can’t take my eyes of this Embellished Elephant Jacket. I decided to keep this piece as the sample and I hung it in my room so I can stare at it 24/7. While designing this special jacket, I got to thinking about the significance of Elephants and what they mean in different cultures. I LOVE when clothing embodies meaning or tells a story and because I have the tendency to analyze everything I decided to do some research on Elephants in light of releasing this new denim design.

When I think about Elephants, I think back to Disney’s The Jungle Book and imagine Elephants stomping through bamboo singing chants about marching. I also have that phrase “An elephant never forgets” running on repeat in my head. At the rate that I think about the world, I actually am surprised I’ve never thought past those generic thoughts when it comes to elephants.

After doing some basic Internet research I realized there are a few consistent themes that span across various cultures when it comes to this majestic creature. My favorites, however, are that elephants embody strength, wisdom, peace and good fortune. With these concepts in mind, I like to think that when you wear this jacket it will bring you good luck and peace of mind. With so many clothes being mass produced these days, we often forget that across the globe, clothing can have great cultural significance and bring meaning to someone’s life. This elephant jacket, has a story, one that unifies culture and brings new life to a once loved denim jacket.

Let’s expand a bit on this thought. All of the denim I source for my jackets comes from vintage suppliers. Either online, or hand selected from thrift stores around California, or flea markets in Los Angeles. Special care goes into making sure these denim jackets are in great condition, but still show subtle signs of their past life, giving them that sought after vintage feel. Once the jacket is tracked down, materials from Thailand and India come together to create the embellished back panel. After a couple hours of labor, a few broken sewing machine needles and lots and lots of pinning, you finally have the finished product. In this way, each jacket merges different cultures while simultaneously taking old clothing and re-making it into something new, modern and truly one of a kind. This piece is something you can’t find anywhere else, and the fact that there will only be five of these lovelies out in the world, makes it that much more exciting! (Especially when they’re sprinkled with magical elephant luck and whimsical love and peace vibes.)
