☾ ☆

Five years ago today, I sat down at my parent’s computer and created an Etsy shop under the name “wildandfreejewelry.” I didn’t think much of it at the time, as it was entirely for fun and a way to channel my creativity into something other than school. I was 19 and honestly, I had no idea what I was doing.

What I did know, was that I loved making things for people, especially when those things involved feathers, flowers or shells. I knew I loved the culture I grew up in. I loved the ocean, Santa Barbara’s mountains, Native American ideology, and the free spirit style of my parents.

As a child, I was raised to value nature and kindness above all else. My parent’s actively encouraged my imagination and surrounded me in the wildness of nature in places like Big Sur and the central California coast. My childhood was full of dress up, imaginary unicorn friends and thoughts of meeting a real mermaid one day. I truly believed in fairies, and was obsessed with Disney Princesses.  At a young age, I recognized that growing up may mean I would have to leave these magical daydreams and stories behind, and I vowed to never grow up.

I think that’s why, when I started to design jewelry and accessories, I naturally gravitated towards things that reminded me of playing dress up as a child. I designed things that sparked distant memories of a world where princesses and fairies were my best friends. A world where life was full of magic, hope and endless possibilities.

Ironically, in the past five years, Wild & Free Jewelry has taught me that the magical world I once escaped to as a child exists. It exists in all of you. All of my fans and customers have truly made my world a fairy tale.

When I think about it, it makes me want to cry of happiness. Meeting some of you in massive crowds at festivals, on the street in a new city, or just in passing at the store, has changed my daily life into a remarkable dream come true. When I started Wild & Free Jewelry, I didn’t think twice about it becoming a career, because I never thought it could. All of you believed in me, and because of that, I now believe in myself.

Today is the first day of Chapter Five for Wild & Free Jewelry. I hope this year I can help your world turn to magic, as you did for mine.
