I’ve been saving my favorite festival story for this Day Three post because it’s the perfect example of the kindness and authentic spirit of Lightning in a Bottle.
On the last day, I went all out with my butterfly hair clips (they matched my Nine Lives Bazaar Dress so well, how could I not?). This ensemble attracted so many complements that I could barely make eye contact with a stranger without them mentioning how much they loved the butterflies in my hair.
As per usual, Natascha and I got a bit distracted taking photos, and we were rushing to catch the end of Alina Baraz. The sun cast a magical gold glow across the festival as we rushed to the Lightning Stage. Once we finally settled in our spot in the crowd, I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned around.
Behind me stood the cutest girl, who exclaimed that she’d seen me pass by in the crowd and had to follow me to tell me that she loved my butterflies. She then elaborated with a story from her childhood and ever since that moment I’ve been thinking about the beauty of her words.
She told me that when she was young, she used to call butterflies “smiles,” because when they flutter by, it’s almost impossible to look at them and not smile. She said that as a child, she would see butterflies and say “Mom, look at that smile! It’s so pretty!”
She then went on to explain that when she saw me walk by, she immediately thought, “Look at that girl, she has so many smiles in her hair and she’s so beautiful! Her soul must be bursting with love and happiness.”
It was so SWEET! That stranger made my weekend with such a heartfelt, genuine complement, not to mention an insanely rad story. The fact that she even tracked me down after I passed by, meant so much to me.
Now, whenever I see a butterfly or work on butterfly crowns and hair clips, I’m going to think back to that moment and smile.
The energy of Lightning In A Bottle is contagious. Now that I’m back in the “real world” I’ve made a personal vow to be kind and giving to strangers more often.
Until next year, LIB….
xx
